Miriam Caney is a one-time character and teacher of Spanish at Arlen High School. She appears in the episode "Peggy Makes the Big Leagues."

History[]

Peggy Hill is given a chance to substitute at Arlen High School, and she meets Caney while in the teacher's lounge. The two of them talk and comment on each other's similar glasses. At lunchtime on Peggy's first day of subbing, Caney offers Peggy to sit at her table with the other teachers, and Peggy asks about David Kalaiki-Ali'i, a star football athlete with failing grades. Caney says that she and the other teachers let him pass the class and consider David to be unteachable. Peggy doubts this and tries teaching David, but he does not pay attention in class and fails a test, so Peggy fails him, making him academically suspended.

When Peggy goes to the teachers' lunch table next time, Caney and the other faculty shun her, and Peggy notices that Caney has changed her glass frames, having circular instead of square ones. Peggy asks why her fellow faculty do not support her, and Caney replies that if she wants to make an impact, then she should go back to middle school, and she and the other teachers get up and leave.
