Leanne "Le Le" Platter (voiced by Pamela Adlon) is Luanne's violent alcoholic mother and Hoyt Platter's ex-wife who was imprisoned for stabbing her husband in the back with a fork. Though she is often mentioned during the series, she appears in-person only in the episodes "Leanne's Saga" and "Lucky's Wedding Suit," visiting Luanne in Arlen after her release from prison. She often calls Luanne "Lu-Lu" and notes how people supposedly mistake her and Luanne for sisters whenever they are seen together.

Appearance[]

Leanne has platinum blonde hair that is similarly styled like Luanne's, albeit more messy, with what is assumed to be light brown roots, radiant peach skin, a curvy body and wears heavy makeup. She’s seen typically wearing a hot pink crop-top that shows off her midriff and blue jeans, paired with earrings. She has a heart-shaped tattoo on her left breast. She claimed while drunk at her engagement party that she was "only 34," though she is likely older.

Personality[]

When sober, Leanne seems to be a bubbly, party-loving woman. She seems to be desperate and can easily influence men as she had made Hoyt change his mind about marrying a pharmacist years ago and had quickly got engaged to Bill just days after meeting him. Boomhauer even claimed that she once came onto him like a "dang ol' animal." As she "entertained" for Hoyt while at her future husband's bachelor party to his previous fiancee, she also demonstrated experience with party-style striptease acts during her and Bill's engagement party. However, she was unable to find work after her prison release. After her release, she made an effort to "walk with the lord" and make amends for the suffering she caused others when she was drinking, though this effort would quickly be abandoned in favor of drinking again to maintain her romance life.

While at the Hill residence, she is seen doing a workout which involves using a shovel to lift two full buckets of water, which reveals she is also physically fit. Leanne also seems to prioritize love interests over motherhood even when sober, as she completely forgot to show up at the Beauty Academy's "Mother-Daughter Night" with Luanne in favor of flirting with Bill and began neglecting her more to spend time with Bill. She seems to be spend a lot of money on things as makeup, clothing and cigarettes, and even costs Bill what little is left of his paycheck for two beer/beverage hats and four grape sodas during their day of extensive shopping. Receipts from both the Mega-Lo Mart and Fashion Factory also showed that Leanne's spending habits resulted in Bill spending a total of $326.53 on her that day alone. However, she doesn't seem to mind if Bill is unable to take her somewhere that costs money and will opt to instead him pleasure with more foot-rubs.

Unlike her young adult daughter, Leanne is a smoker. When drunk, Leanne is also violent, reckless, verbally abusive and will carelessly hurl objects (such as empty beer bottles) at walls, and sometimes at people if they happen to be in the way of one. She also seems to get more frisky, as she had lifted her shirt at her and Bill's engagement party to show off her breasts to the attendees and did a risque dance on a horrified Buckley. She is also seen to be very physically abusive, as she had stabbed her ex-husband with a fork and would punch and throw things at Bill. Leanne was able to give Bill notable bruises during her violent, drunken spats as well. During the engagement party, she insults Luanne by telling her daughter to quit calling her "mama" as she was "only 34." She also is shown to get extremely violent if she is insulted, like when Buckley called her a skank as she was tempting him with a lap dance, making her pissed to where she immediately tries to stab him with a fork.

History[]

According to Hank, Peggy's brother Hoyt had planned to marry a pharmacist, but he wound up marrying Leanne instead after she entertained at his bachelor party. While drunk during yet another one of arguments, she stabbed him with a fork.[1]

Season 2[]

After being released from prison, Peggy reluctantly lets Leanne stay at the Hill residence until she can find a job that can support her. As conditions for her release from prison, she received court orders which banned her from drinking alcohol and seeing any of her alcoholic "old friends."

While seeing Bill, she persuades him to buy things for her while making up excuses to Luanne for not being present for her daughter's events, and Bill winds up with no cash-on-hand until he can receive his next paycheck. Bill is soon unable to pay for a renewed prescription for the medication he needs to treat his foot fungus. When Leanne notices that his foot fungus has returned, she is so disgusted that she violates her court order and starts to drink again. She and Bill are soon engaged, though their relationship rapidly degenerates once she starts drinking again and starts violently abusing Bill. Everyone, except initially Bill and Luanne, sees her as an un-ladylike, psychotic menace to society. During Bill and Leanne's engagement party, Leanne is heavily drunk, does exotic dancing and also flashes her breasts to the party guests. After Buckley refuses her advances and insults her, Leanne grabs a fork and tries to stab him. Peggy prevents Leanne from doing so by grabbing her wrist and saying "Excuse me, but that was my fork". Peggy berates Leanne, calling her out on her bad parenting and how she cannot call herself Luanne's sister, but must take the role of her mother, as Luanne has been waiting a long time for Leanne to show an ounce of motherly care to her. Peggy tells her that she hopes one day Leanne can live without alcohol- but until then, they can all live without her.

Leanne then lies to everyone by saying she is sorry and, as soon as Peggy lowers her guard, reverts to her feral state and tackles her. Leanne says she was able to beat up Hoyt, and she'll have no trouble beating Peggy up. However Peggy is able to fend off Leanne with her big feet, mentioning how Hoyt has smaller feet (size 6). After Peggy defeats Leanne, Leanne decides to leave and asks Luanne to come with her. Luanne, however, shakes her head and Leanne, still drunk, shouts "Fine! Then, I ain't your sister no more!" Leanne then steals Bill's truck and drives out of Arlen, presumably for good.

Season 3[]

She appeared in Hank and Peggy's wedding video in "Hank's Cowboy Movie."

Season 6[]

In "Fun with Jane and Jane" where Luanne joins a cult she thinks is a sorority, she mentions her mother being in prison, which reveals Leanne got thrown back behind bars, presumably for reverting to her old alcoholic ways and also for stealing Bill's truck.

Season 11[]

In "Luanne Gets Lucky," Luanne makes another mention of Leanne being in jail and how the guard who tackled her mom down had an updo, meaning Luanne was present at at least one of her mom's court hearings. Later, she can be seen at Luanne and Lucky's wedding, meaning she was either released or was allowed to attend Luanne's wedding before getting sent back to jail.

Season 12[]

In "Life: A Loser's Manual," Luanne revealed that Leanne is currently in jail.

Relationships[]

Luanne Platter[]

Leanne cares about her daughter to a degree that she named her "Luanne Leanne" after herself. Despite sometimes calling her daughter by her first name, Leanne, who identifies herself as "Lee-Lee," will instead often call her "Lu-Lu." Though Luanne shows affection to her mother, and also urges her father to reconcile with her so they can "be a family again," Leanne neglects spending time with Luanne soon after she gets out of jail, instead opting to pursue a romantic relationship with someone, in this case Bill. Despite this, Luanne is shown to genuinely love her mother and is shown to quickly and easily forgive her, like when she didn't show up to the Beauty Academy's Mother-Daughter Night which involved the academy's female students giving their mothers beauty makeovers. When Luanne asked her mother to attend one of Luanne's Manger Babies shows, Leanne instead opted to go spend the day with Bill and encouraged her daughter to support this decision so she could "be happy." Still, Leanne seems to at least somewhat care for her daughter, as shown when telling her "I love you too, baby doll" after Luanne stated "I love you" and keeping her obligation, though in late fashion, to go to Mother-Daughter Night until meeting Bill while he is delivering beer for Hank.

Leanne—who conceived her daughter at a very young age—prefers to be called Luanne's sister to feel younger. When Luanne drunkenly began to depart from Arlen, she tells Luanne to come with her, but she refuses and she drunkenly yelled that the two are not "sisters" anymore. It is assumed that despite their rocky relationship, the two are at least on speaking terms, for she had shown up to Luanne and Lucky's wedding and it’s implied that Luanne has visited her in prison and gone to her court hearings.

Hoyt Platter[]

According to Hank, Hoyt had met Leanne at his bachelor party when he was engaged to a pharmacist, for Leanne was "entertaining." Hoyt apparently mingled enough with her at it to break up with the pharmacist and call off their wedding. The two had a very abusive, unhealthy relationship for years due to Leanne's drinking, as described by Hank to be "18 years of drunken Hell". Despite this, they do have a child together.

After divorcing, Hoyt is shown as despising and fearing Leanne. He absolutely refused to see nor be anywhere near her, even to the point, as he and Peggy claimed, that he was willing to stay in hiding on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico until her death certificate was faxed to him. Leanne proudly says that she kicked his ass, having no remorse for abusing him. Years later, however, it was revealed that Hoyt was never hiding on an oil rig after Leanne stabbed him, as Peggy often told Hank and Luanne, and that this was actually claimed to cover up the fact that he was spending time in prison. Hoyt is revealed to be a crude, obnoxious, self-indulgent person, in a manner similar to Leanne.

Bill Dauterive[]

While at the Hill house, Leanne meets Bill and the two start a relationship. At first, the two got along well, flirted, had sex in Hank's garage and went shopping together, which Bill would buy things for her to where he can't afford his prescription for his toe fungus. However, their relationship sharply declined into a very unhealthy one after Leanne, who did not know about Bill's toe fungus until after his prescription ran out, began drinking again to keep her mind off of Bill’s fungus-infested toes to massage them, as he could not afford to refill his prescriptions due to Leanne’s shopping habits.

Leanne reverted to her drunken violent ways, often punching and throwing objects at Bill to the point of him having multiple bruises, Though Bill was eager to announce their marriage engagement, a drunken Leanne punched him hard in his left shoulder after claiming "it was supposed to be a surprise." After moving in with Bill following their engagement, Leanne would not only physically abuse him, but also would often insult him, specifically about his weight and fungus-infested feet. She was also seen throwing dishes at him during one of her drunken spats. and he is revealed to have a black left eye. Despite enduring so much physical and verbal abuse, Bill, who still in denial about Hank's warnings about Leanne's violent personality, still very much wanted to marry Leanne until their disastrous engagement party. After being fended off by Peggy, Leanne stumbles into his truck, driving off in it and stealing it. Bill decides not to call the police, but said he would if she were to come back. The two hasn't interacted ever since.

Trivia[]

  • It is revealed in "The Company Man" that Leanne may have remarried and Peggy was one of her bridesmaids, which is strange given that Leanne and Peggy hate each other. However, she and Peggy may have been friends before the events with Hoyt.
  • She states herself to be 34 years old, but this is probably a lie, as she met Hoyt at a bachelor party that you had to be 18 to attend (unless she attended underage) and then they were married for 18 years, and then she went to jail, which would mean she was at least 36. Then she gets out of jail a bit later.
  • Due to her obsession of looking young she prefers to call Luanne her "baby sis" or "sister" and told Luanne not to call her "mom".
  • Leanne is also physically fit and, while staying with Hills, did a daily workout by lifting a shovel that held two full buckets of water.
  • In Hank and Peggy's wedding video, Leanne was seen in a green crop top and red skirt, resembling her daughter's trademark outfit.
