"Kahn-scious Uncoupling" is the eighth episode in the fourteenth season, and the 268th episode overall. It first aired on August 4, 2025. This episode was written by Jeremy Hsu and directed by Kyounghee Lim.

Summary[]

Kahn and Minh throw a lavish anniversary party that turns out to be a cover for a secret only Hank knows. Meanwhile, Bobby tries to balance catering the party and helping Connie.

Plot[]

The episode begins with Hank and Peggy bowling with the Souphanousinphones and Dale and Boomhauer. After the Souphanousinphones win and rub their victory in the Hills' faces, they remind everyone about their 30th anniversary happening in a couple of days. However, Khan makes it clear that he doesn't want Bill invited as he is still mad the latter dated Laoma. Later that night, Hank and Peggy have an argument over Hank not backing up Peggy's lie over scoring a 280 in a previous bowling game while they were in Saudi Arabia. The argument ends abruptly when they hear a noise coming from the Souphanousinphones' house and Hank goes over to see if someone is robbing them. However, Hank finds Khan in the garage and sees that he has been living in the garage for quite sometime. After failing to make an excuse, Khan admits to Hank that he and Minh are divorced and their banter at the bowling alley was to cover up their failed marriage. Khan doesn't want the news to be leaked out as the Asian community looks down on divorced families, and he especially doesn't want the Wassanasongs to find out. Hank reluctantly agrees to keep Khan's secret to himself, especially around Peggy.

The next day, Bobby and Connie go over menu items for the anniversary party as the Souphanousinphones hired Robata Chane for the catering. Connie knows that her parents are putting the extra mile into this party just to impress everyone, especially the Wassanasongs as they want her and Chane to get married. Knowing how stressed out Connie is, Bobby promises to do whatever he can to make the food worth remembering.

Back in Arlen, Peggy accuses Hank of lying to her when he got home and says she knows his tell. Hank is forced to tell Peggy about Khan and Minh's divorce, and Peggy is ecstatic as, after years of the Souphanousinphones lording their superiority over the Hills, their marriage failed to last forever. Still, Hank makes Peggy keep it a secret as he doesn't want her to ruin the Souphanousinphones' anniversary party.

On the night of the party, Khan and Minh put up a front about still being a happy couple and continue to brag about it in front of Hank and Peggy. Connie gets uncomfortable with Chane putting on a front about them a couple, causing her to go to Bobby for some time to vent. Thankfully, Bobby's promise to make the party bearable with his food makes Connie happy, even though many people praise Chane more than Bobby despite the latter being the one who did all the work. Connie tries to get Chane to give Bobby some credit, but he doesn't, much to her and Joseph's annoyance. When Khan and Minh talk down about Bobby and Connie's childhood dating just to get in good with the Wassanasongs, Peggy gets mad and almost leaks out the secret. However, Hank pulls Peggy away and convinces her to keep it quiet for Bobby's sake. Meanwhile, Connie confronts Minh about pushing her into marriage with Chane as she doesn't want to make the same mistakes her parents made.

As everyone dances, Bobby asks his parents about how to help Connie with Chane. However, Bobby learns about Khan and Minh's divorce after Peggy pushes Hank to tell their son the truth after doing his tell again. Feeling bad for Connie, Bobby comes to her and tries to comfort her. However, their conversation is leaked onto the big screen as Dale, who is doing audio visual for the party, accidentally switches on a camera he left in a pot and causes everyone to learn the truth about Khan and Minh's divorce. Although Khan tries to play it off as a joke on Bobby's part, Minh decides to stop the charade after seeing how Connie was feeling about this and confirms to everyone that they have been divorced for two years. This revelation causes Ted to lose any respect he had for Khan and deems Connie unworthy of dating Chane. Chane, in turn, ditches Connie without trying to support her in her time of need, and she storms off to the bathroom. Bill, who was trying to get into the party after Kahn probably gave the guards a paper with a false statement that he had assaulted his mom finally manages to get in, he was about to leave after grabbing a chicken leg from a plate next to Kahn as Kahn spots him, but he decides to just let him in as it didn't matter anymore due to everyone knowing about him and Minh being divorced. Connie admits to Peggy that the realization about her parents' divorce is starting to hit her, and Peggy tells her that, despite what happened, Khan and Minh raised her well and she can make her own choices. Later, Bobby finds Connie on the golf course, who tells him that she broke up with Chane and they hug each other in comfort.

The next day, Khan packs up the garage as he has decided to leave to a place for himself when the boys come with some beer to help talk through his problems. While Khan closes the door on them, as he's still reeling from last night and being rejected by his own community, Hank rolls an Alamo beer can through the cracks as if to tell him that, no matter what, he's always welcome in their eyes.

Characters[]

Stinger Quote[]

  • Hank: "This isn't New Jersey, for cryin' out loud."

Trivia[]

  • The title of this episode is a play on the term "Conscious uncoupling", a neologism which refers to a relatively amicable breakup or marital divorce. "Con" is substituted with Kahn's name.
  • This is the first episode featuring Ronny Chieng voicing Kahn Souphanousinphone, succeeding the role from Toby Huss. It is also Kahn's only appearance in Season 14.
  • Kahn mentions his late mother, who was last seen in the Season 7 episode "Maid in Arlen". He has also since regressed on his acceptance of her previous relationship with Bill.
    • The image used to inform bouncers of Bill's presence is a redrawn frame from the Season 2 episode "Bobby Slam", with the pudding in Bill's hands replaced with red JELL-O.
  • Brian Robertson is able to speak Lao greeting sabaidi thuk khon (Lao: ສະບາຍດີ ທຸກ ໆຄົນ), meaning "hello, everyone" to the crowd at the Souphanousinphone's 30th anniversary party. He changes the lyric to "All My Life" by K-Ci & JoJo from "I will never find another lover more precious than you" to "I will never find another lover vong kva chao" (Lao: ວົງ ກວ່າ ເຈົ້າ), meaning "circular than you".
  • Brian's bandmate from the Gentle Funk Orchestra plays the khene, a traditional Lao mouth organ made of bamboo pipes, known for its unique sound and cultural significance in Southeast Asia, particularly in Laos and northeastern Thailand.

Goofs[]

  • In the episode, Hank says he has been married to Peggy for 29 years while Kahn says he has Minh married to him for 30 years, indicating that the Soupanousinphones got married before the Hills. However, in the Season 3 episode "As Old as the Hills", Kahn says the Hills have been married for 20 years while he says he has been married to Minh for only 13 years, indicating that the Hills actually married first.[1] It is possible that Kahn misspoke in that episode when he said that he and Minh have been married for 13 years, or he was just lying for whatever reason in that episode about how long he and Minh have been married for when he said that. Also, if the revival takes place eight years after the original run, then Hank and Peggy would have technically been married for 28 years, well, unless they had their 21st anniversary sometime after the episode, original run and before the show's revival took place.

Quotes[]

Minh: "The Souphanousinphones win again!"

Hank: "Stitched is the weakest tear strength. A real upholstery craftsman would have used bonded loft."
Kahn: "Dai liao. Okay. Okay. Yes, I'm living in the garage, because Me and Minh, we got divorced."
Hank: "Divorced? But, we just saw the two of you together earlier tonight.
Kahn: "All for show. Divorce is a mark of shame in the Asian Country Club Community. If they found out, I'd be the lowest of the Lao, like a Laotian Bill Dauterive."

Hank: "That was unnecessarily dramatic."

Hank: "This isn't New Jersey, for cryin' out loud."

Minh: "It's true everyone, this anniversary party is a sham. We have been divorced for 2 years. Thank you for coming."

Kahn: "Okay, we're divorced. But I still live in the garage."
Ted Wassanasong: "I find that very sad."
Cindy Wassanasong: "And disgusting."
Ted Wassanasong: "Cindy. Maybe Chane shouldn't be dating a girl from a broken family whose father sleeps with leftover paint and silverfish."
Kahn: "It's actually geckos."
