However, soon after Bobby returns to Arlen, a major shock occurs after Joseph comes back from summer vacation having undergone puberty, which results in him growing six inches, gaining a more mature voice, and starting to grow a mustache. When Joseph and Bobby meet at the restaurant Rattlesnakes, Joseph gets an adult menu and is offered beer thanks to his appearance and Bobby gets a kid's menu, despite the fact that Bobby is old enough to receive the adult menu. Joseph's newfound maturity sparks jealousy in Bobby, as he had been tutored on how to be a man the whole summer and how he was going to take Joseph "under his wing." In contrast, Joseph is filled with anxiety over his all-over acne, cannot get girls out of his head, has Dale constantly pestering him over his new height, and has outgrown his bike. All in all, the two teenage boys wish that they could trade places.

Meanwhile, Hank builds caskets for himself and Peggy, the latter of whom is not given permission by Bobby to deliver his birthday cake to him during the party. She claims that she was at the Learning Annex of Arlen and learned some moves from DJ Spaz, but Bobby refuses. During Bobby's birthday party, Joseph tries to dance with Sharise but accidentally elbows her in the face. When he tries to apologize, he is ostracized by the girls for staring weirdly at them. Trying to console Joseph, Bobby brings him to his room with Connie, who is disgusted that Bobby is trying to get his friend to watch them kiss, and she leaves. Going to her house, Joseph apologizes and tearfully confides in Connie, and the two kiss. Going to the window to apologize as well, Bobby sees the kiss and is infuriated. In response, he climbs through the window and punches Joseph twice in the nose, making him bleed. Minh goes to tend to Joseph's nose wound, but while staring down Minh's cleavage, he kisses her. Minh is amused and says Kahn will be also but Connie, who witnessed the whole thing, feels betrayed and runs out.

Running back to his own house after the mistake, Joseph walks in on his father watching TV. When Dale again teases him about his growth and height, the teenager runs out and steals Dale's Bugabago. He almost runs over Connie, who asks to come aboard as the two say they want to get as far away from the town and their lives as possible. Bobby comes aboard too, as he does not want either of them to go. Halfway down the street, the distracted Joseph crashes the Bugabago into a lamppost, and they evacuate. Minutes later, Dale furiously wants to know who crashed his car and suspects a nearby old lady with a walker. The three kids, who have returned to the scene of the crime, answer "Teenagers", knowing that their parents do not think of them as true teenagers yet. Peggy demonstrates this when she presents Bobby with his birthday cake, in accordance with her control freak nature. The three children reconcile, and Bobby awkwardly receives his cake from his mother.
