Gary Kasner

Gary Kasner (spelled Garry Kasner in “I Don’t Want To Wait…”) was the un-orthodox Jewish ex-boyfriend of Tilly, Hank's mother. He was primarily voiced by actor Carl Reiner and once by Maurice LaMarche.

Background[]

Gary was from Arizona, where he met and fell in love with Tilly. During the Korean War, Gary served in the U.S. Navy on the submarine "S.S. Trout II", and he had a tattoo of the submarine. His appetite for food also resulted in him needing bypass surgery.

Appearances[]

Gary appeared in several episodes throughout the series. In his first appearance in "The Unbearable Blindness of Laying", Gary and Tilly's antics caused Hank to go temporarily blind when he walked in on them having sex on his kitchen table. Though he is a somewhat observant Jew who celebrates Hanukkah, he still respects the religious views of others in the Hill family, and even takes Hank to a healing televangelist Hank only pretended to like as an excuse to avoid accepting his mother continuing to pursue a romantic relationship following he dysfunctional marriage to Cotton; when Gary meets Cotton for the first time, he stand up to him for insulting Tilly and threatens to him "I'll kick your ass" if he continued doing so. It is at first hinted that Gary and Tilly lived together during their romantic relationship, as shown when Hank called Tilly over the phone shortly before Mother's Day and Gary coming in to say he "can't return" his exposed body when he presents it to her as a Mother's Day present, though he is later revealed to have a bachelor pad. Bobby was particularly fond of Gary, as he often quoted him after being around him, and Gary even spoiled Bobby shortly before his 13th birthday, which in his religion is the start of manhood. Tilly and Gary broke up before or during the last season. Tilly discussed her affair with Chuck and how she left Gary for him in the season 13 episode, "The Honeymooners".
